The Abbotsford 48 Hour Film Competition 2024

Hey film lovers! We’re competing in another film contest. This time, it’s the Abbotsford 48 Hour Film Competition. We’re going to make a film in 48 hours.

I made a little video to get the ball rolling on our behind-the-scenes coverage of what we’re doing.

More information and posts will be added through the weekend!

Prompts

For starters, here are our prompts for this year:

PropBleach

Note: It is your responsibility to please use this prop safely and appropriately. (A fake bottle or liquid supposed to be bleach is fine).

Line of Dialogue: “They’re eating the dogs, they’re eating the cats

Narrative ElementSomeone or something gets lost.

Day 2

Here’s our very hastily made Day 2 update!!

Day 3

We weren’t able to get an update video made or anything. I would have been 90% eyebags anyway. Time was very sparing, and there wasn’t room for much error. But we completed the film, and submitted it on time.

We did get a lot of great behind the scenes shots, courtesy of Babak Karaee (@babak_karaee on instagram). You can check those out right here:

Day After

Cast has been very positive about the film. It was pretty close to exactly what I wanted to make. I didn’t compromise too much, and made what I wanted to make. It was a big gamble, because it took almost the entire time required, but I was quite inspired.

Part of my inspiration was the Lego Masters Australia: Ultimate Masters finale. No spoilers, but the winners made a plan that required them to go hard from moment one, but it paid off like gangbusters. I had to sprint the whole weekend, but it was worth it, and I don’t feel too exhausted today.

In retrospect, this Competition was very very hard. The prompts of bleach and the line, ‘They’re eating the dogs, they’re eating the cats’ were a lot to deal with. Either would have been hard on their own, and the combination was a nightmare. The script was a big struggle, but I got there in the end.

This was also the cheapest Barigord Production. I was working alone except for Babak Karaee, our behind-the-scenes photographer, and he didn’t stick around for dinner. No extra budget was needed for catering. There was no need for any additional equipment or Lego beyond what we already had. The only cost was the entry fee.

Last Year’s Film

Here’s our film from last year, Invasion of the Pop People. We were runner-up for best film, and I won best director!

It’s a tough act to follow, but I think our 2024 entry is even better. Enjoy!
