Barigord Films – 10/06/24 – The Abbotsford 48hr Film Competition 2024
Hey film lovers! Last night was the premiere screening of our latest film, Centre Frame!
The film was screened as part of the Abbotsford 48hr Film Competition, and the Abbotsford Film Festival. We’re so honoured to be a part of the screening, the competition, and the film community at large.
Tough Competition…
17 teams started the competition, and 15 finished films. The required elements were VERY difficult, but everyone did very well with them. They were:
- Theme – Someone or Something is Lost
- Prop – Bleach (The hardest required element I’ve ever had in a film competition)
- Line of Dialogue – “They’re eating the dogs, they’re eating the cats.” (the second hardest element ever).
…Hot Films…
The films were all of very high quality. They looked good, they sounded good, and they were extremely creative. I don’t think any of them were remotely alike.
I don’t want to mention some and not others, and all 15 deserve mention. Completing a competition like this is a major achievement, and will have a big impact on the filmmakers and their development. That being said, I will mention 4 films specifically that made a big impression on me.
The Old Man and the Dog – (Winner of Best Film) – a mature, subtle and very relatable story about an older man, his daughter, and their dog. The film was well shot, well acted, and a very deserving winner!
Shoebill – We each got a vote for Audience’s Choice, and this was mine. The film was very well shot, and created an intense, palpable mood. The story was abstract and raw, but grounded in emotion. I appreciate a film that makes me feel something.
Pulse – (Winner of an award for best use of limited resources – well deserved) Also an intense movie that made me feel. Excellent use of sound. This was the shortest film of the evening, and according to the filmmaker, was a very compressed process. They didn’t use all of their 48hrs, but it didn’t matter.
Dominant – (Winner of Best Actor and Best Editing) An unexpected treat! Fun, punchy, and subtly very well-made. I hope the makers are very encouraged, and plan to do more in future.
I hope all of the films will be made available by the filmmakers.
…And Us!
So how did our little film do? We made a Lego stop-motion film, about an actor and their experiences in the film industry.

And it went over pretty well! We took home two trophies!
First, the ‘Crafting Goodness’ award, as presented by one of the sponsors, Field House Brewing. I’m not sure what the exact criteria for the award is, but it represents excellence in crafting and goodness. What better award is there to win? Thanks so much Field House!
Second, we won Best Director. Technically, that’s an award for me, but film requires an army, and I had it. This is my second win as Best Director in this festival. I also won the award last year. I don’t think I can describe how good this feels. Maybe in a film someday.
Special Thanks
I was able to thank some people at the Festival. This is pretty much what I said:
I would like to thank Kevin MacLeod, Bryan Teoh, Rafael Krux, Alexander Nakarada, Komiku and all the other generous people who compose music, digitally or otherwise, and then make that music available to the public domain. You have done so much for filmmakers like me, and I am so grateful.
I would also like to thank our cast, all of whom contributed to the film on multiple levels. Special shout outs to Andrew Wade, our Executive Producer, and Babak Karaee, who did our behind-the-scenes photography and drove us to Abbotsford for the screening!
